Why hire a product manager at a VC fund?
As an early stage fund we engage with founders both through pre-seed investments as well as by helping to incubate very early ideas. As part of that incubation process we believe that some of the most valuable work to be done is defining both the problem as well as the product to address it. To that end, we believe that Product Managers are well positioned to take on the earliest responsibilities from exploring markets and meeting customers to defining a product vision and translating specific product requirements. This is why we’re looking to bring on a PM who can work with us and our tech fellows to help with some of the earliest company defining work.
The ideal candidate is:
Experienced: You have at least 3+ years of experience in a product management role at a startup or tech company.
Curious: You ask why and have a history of actively trying out the latest in AI tools and model developments.
Tinkering: You have the ability to create an MVP and iterate the product based on early feedback. Have the willingness to “throw away” 80% of what we create.
Where will they focus?
This first problem area for the PM to focus on is a new paradigm for customer interaction within the world of Fintech. At a high-level they will:
Understand the customer: leveraging SciFi’s network they will interview a variety of Fintech customers to understand their needs and highlight current gaps/opportunities.
Scan the playing field: map the current landscape of incumbent tools and new AI startups working to address customer operations in Fintech and beyond.
Define the product vision: synthesize the feedback from customers and the market scan into a differentiated product vision and translate high-level ideas into specific product requirements.
While this person doesn’t necessarily need to join the first company idea they work on, one potential outcome would be for them to become a co-founder for an idea they have the most conviction in.
This position is fully salaried and located in our office in San Francisco where you’ll be collaborating with the SciFi VC team and a small number of rotating tech fellows.
